Watch Waterproofing
We offer quality waterproofing service. Our expert watchmaker will diligently test all possible entry points to ensure your watch is waterproof to the level of its original design.
Watches utilize seals and gaskets in many parts to prevent moisture from entering the watch. Depending on the lever of water resistance, seals and gaskets are installed on crowns, backing, buttons, and bezel. Over time these seals and gaskets stretch and/or harden, comprising its ability to fend off moisture.
Is my watch waterproof?
The term “waterproof” is oftenly loosely used and could be interpreted differently by many. Some may refer to a watch that can be worn while washing hands and dishes as waterproof, while others insist it must be able to endure water sports such as swimming. The fact is, there are different levels of waterproof (measured by degree of water resistance), and you should always consult the original manufacturer's manual to determine whether your watch is protected for your level of intended use. Here is a sample chart of level of water resistance from Casio:
How do I know if I need waterproofing?
Generally speaking, you may consider waterproofing if your watch is at least 5bar / 50m water resistant and you intend to use it frequently in contact with water. If you never intend to wear your watch in water, then waterproofing is really optional.
There are few scenarios where we recommend waterproofing:
1. Condensation in your watch
If there is condensation in your watch, it’s an indication that either the watch went through more contact with water than its intended level of resistance or there is a leak in the watch. Waterproofing will help determine where the compromise is, and we will replace the seals and/or gaskets accordingly. If condensation remains in the watch for too long, rust may form, and it may also require overhaul service.
2. Watch service requiring opening of backing
Most watch services require removing the back of the watch: battery change, overhaul, tuning, just to name a few. While our watchmaker is very careful in performing these services, we do not know the integrity of water resistance on the rest of the potential entry points. Therefore we recommend waterproofing if you intend to use it in frequent contact with water after.
Proper use and waterproofing will prevent moisture from damaging your watch. Schedule an appointment to service your watch today.
